Bishop Steven Raica of the Catholic Diocese of Gaylord celebrated the 125th birthday of St. Wenceslaus Church at 8:00 am mass this morning. The well attended mass posed for a picture and went on to breakfast with the Bishop and Rev. Tony Cureton who currently serves mass each Sunday at St. Wenc. as well as St. Kateri Tekakwitha in Peshawbetown and the Carmelite Monastery in Traverse City. St. Wenceslaus was named for the patron saint of the Bohemian people and was formed by immigrants who left what is now the Czech Republic to escape poverty and to avoid forced military service in the struggle between Prussia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The August 20th edition of the Leelanau Enterprise features an article by Amy Hubbell on the history of the church.
